I took over a decorative plaster e-shop from the previous supplier: repairs, weight loss and a hosting move with no downtime.
Decorative plasterwork with a catalogue of some eight hundred pages. The site worked, but the quote path had holes, images dragged it down, and the old hosting could do none of the things that make a site faster. I took it over, fixed it and moved it to a new server without downtime.
The brief
Years of additions by different people had piled up. The metres and pieces calculator returned wrong numbers, the largest rosette showed a price of 0 CZK, the contact form had broken labels, and the page could not be zoomed on a phone. On top of that it was slow, and the old hosting allowed none of the settings that fix that.
What I did
I worked in the order that matters to the customer. First the path from catalogue through product and cart to a submitted enquiry, then page weight: 34,000 lighter image variants, leaner PHP and database queries, plugin scripts only on pages that actually use them. Finally the move to hosting where server caching and scheduled tasks can be configured. The switch ran in stages so that neither the site nor the email went down.
Outcome
- The whole path from catalogue to a submitted enquiry works, including the metres and pieces calculator
- 34,000 lighter images, all 875 addresses checked with no broken link and no fatal errors
- A hosting move with no downtime; all 746 sitemap addresses respond after the switch
